Are Independent Women Killing Chivalry?

As I left my office this afternoon, a nice woman held the door for me when she noticed me a few paces back. A simple notion that I am usually the giver of, rather than the recipient. It made me try to recall the last time a man held the door for me. Other than my husband, of course, who tells me that I never give him a chance to open the door because I'm always three strides in front of him (I can't help it, usually we are going into a restaurant when we are together in public so who can blame a girl for practically running?!) or older men at church, I honestly couldn't remember the last time a door was held for me by a man.

I could stand on a soapbox and say that chivalry is dead, but I'm beginning to think that isn't the case. Could it be that we, self-empowered, independent women of the 21st Century have become so self-reliant that we can't even allow a man to open a door for us? Maybe I'm not in a hurry to get to food, after all, maybe I'm in a hurry to get to the door to prove that I don't need a man to open it for me...

Thoughts?

P.S. If any of you try to wait for a door to be held for you tomorrow, only to see that door slamming in your face, I take no responsibility for that...I blame the parents of that chivalrousless man! Haha

  1. That really is something to think about! My husband does for me, but when we first started dating he kept getting frustrated that I would try to open the door for him. It really bothered him that I wouldn't let him do what he was supposed to do. It's funny now because I literally just remembered that just now. I always reach for the door because I just don't expect anyone else to. And if there is someone with a stroller, I will like run to the door to open it for them. I hate when people ignore a struggling person like that!! So maybe it isn't dead...we just all want to open the doors for each other? I have no idea. But, I do know that my little 18 year old brother apparently opens all the car doors for his girlfriend. My Mom told me that, but she doesn't know where he got it from haha.

  2. I agree with Morgan (HI MORGAN!) haha I personally love chivalry and I'm always telling my twin brother do open the door for girls (especially his date!) and to be a gentleman. It is dying ( que tears) but it isn't dead yet! I always appreciate someone holding a door open for me and i try to do the same when I notice people behind me.

  3. Honestly when someone holds the door for me it can really make my day! I always do it and I've actually had fairly good experiences with it done for me but not always.

  4. I always try to hold for people behind me but I think I need to start paying more attention to who holds it for me! I will say that when it comes to my husband, he ALWAYS holds the door for me. If we are going somewhere and I am in front of him, I don't open the door, I wait until he catches up and opens it for me. He also opens my car door for me, no matter what. Writing this makes me think that maybe I'm spoiled but I think it's such a chivalrous gesture and it means so much to me!

  5. I hold the door open for anyone because it is just a nice thing to do. I do think that some women are taking independence too far. I am saddened by the number of women who are married but will let you know, as soon as possible, that they can take care of themselves and don't need their husband for anything. Taking care of yourself is fine, but the person who you decided to share your life with should not be a disposable accessory that you don't need.

I read a blog post about the blogger being groped in public by a stranger. The blogger refused to yell for her husband because she did not want to be "one of those girls who needs her husband". Sorry, I think that making a fuss when you are sexually assaulted is reasonable!
